These are not two versions of the same appliance, and the honest comparison is about exhaust, not about heat. A pellet stove burns compressed wood, needs electricity to run its auger and blower, and must vent its exhaust outdoors through a wall or a chimney. A ventless gas unit needs no vent and no power, because it releases everything it produces, including water vapor, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, into the room. So the real question is which constraint you can live with: cutting a hole in your house and plugging in an appliance, or accepting indoor combustion products plus a legality question that changes by address.
Heat output, ambiance and running cost all matter. They matter second.

What “EPA-certified” means on the wood side, and why gas has no equivalent
Pellet and wood stoves sold new in the United States are covered by federal air emission standards for residential wood heaters. Under the standards finalized on April 2, 2020, stoves manufactured after May 15, 2020 must meet a limit of 2.0 grams of particulate matter per hour to be EPA-certified, tightened from the earlier 4.5 g/hr step (US EPA, checked 2026-08-18). The EPA’s Burn Wise program also describes pellet stoves as among the cleanest wood-burning appliances available, and confirms two practical points: they need an electrical supply because motorized parts feed the fire and move the air, and they vent, either through an external wall or through an existing chimney.
There is no comparable indoor emission certification for a ventless gas appliance, because the standard that governs it is a product safety standard rather than an air quality standard. ANSI Z21.11.2 covers unvented room heaters, and the residential code text requires listing to it, an input rating no higher than 40,000 Btu/h, a limit of 20 Btu/h per cubic foot of room volume for all unvented appliances in a space, and an oxygen-depletion-sensitive safety shutoff that acts before oxygen in the surrounding atmosphere falls below the concentration the code sets, not lower than 18 percent (2024 International Residential Code, section G2445, as published on UpCodes, checked 2026-08-18).
Those are real protections. They are protections against oxygen depletion and gross misapplication, not a certification that the air in the room stays clean.
The point every comparison page gets wrong: there is no ventless pellet stove
Search for one and you will find pages that appear to offer it. There is no such product for indoor residential use, and the reason is physical rather than regulatory. Solid fuel combustion produces particulate matter along with carbon monoxide, and no consumer appliance filters that out of a living room. Pellet stoves are vented appliances, full stop, per the EPA’s own description of how they work.
If a listing or a blog post implies otherwise, it is either describing a direct vent pellet stove (which still vents, just horizontally through a wall instead of up a chimney) or it is wrong. The absence of venting is a property of ventless gas appliances only, and it is bought at a specific price that this whole site exists to explain.
The power outage argument, and why it cuts both ways
This is the argument most often used to sell ventless, and it is the one place where the ventless case is genuinely strong. A pellet stove without electricity is furniture. Its auger cannot feed pellets and its blower cannot move air, so unless the owner has fitted a battery backup or has a generator, the pellet stove goes out in exactly the storm that took the power.
A ventless gas unit with a standing pilot or piezo ignition keeps burning through an outage. A wood stove does too.
Here is the part the sales pitch leaves out. An outage is also when the risk profile of an unvented appliance is at its worst. The house is shut tight against the cold, the family has moved into the one warm room, nobody is opening windows, the run is long instead of short, and if the CO alarm is a plug-in model without battery backup it is not working either. If you are buying ventless specifically for outage resilience, then a battery-powered or battery-backed CO alarm is part of the purchase, and so is a plan for which room you use and for how long.

Labor, honestly, in both directions
Vendors on each side describe the other side’s chores accurately and their own vaguely.
A pellet stove is work. In steady cold weather you are refilling the hopper about once a day, storing bags somewhere dry, emptying ash, cleaning the burn pot and glass, and having the vent and the stove serviced on a schedule. It is far less work than a wood stove, which adds sourcing, splitting, stacking, seasoning and carrying. It is much more work than turning a knob.
A ventless unit is not maintenance-free either, whatever the brochure says. The logs or the burner media sit in a specific arrangement set by the manufacturer, and moving them is not decorating. Misplaced media disturbs the flame pattern and is a documented route to sooting and incomplete combustion. The unit needs annual service by a qualified technician, the ODS pilot assembly needs to be kept clean, and the CO alarm needs testing.
Which one fits which reader
- You have piped gas, one cold room, no chimney and no appetite for construction. Ventless is the option built for that situation, provided it is permitted where you live and the room is big enough under your code. Read the legality question before anything else.
- You want a room heated hard, for long hours, with the exhaust outside your envelope. A pellet stove is the better match, and its installation cost and its power dependence are the price.
- You have wood and outages and no gas line. A wood stove earns its keep, and its labor is the price.

On running costs, and why we do not publish a number
Comparing pellets to natural gas to propane to firewood means comparing four commodity prices that differ by region, by season and by delivery arrangement, against appliance efficiencies that differ by model. Any single figure published for a national audience is wrong for most readers on the day they read it.
Do the arithmetic with your own inputs: your gas or propane rate, your local pellet price per ton delivered, your wood cost including your time, and the appliance’s own rated input from its data plate. Your utility can usually give you a current rate schedule, and a local hearth dealer can quote installed cost for each option in your house.
A timing note
Both appliance types are seasonal purchases and both need trades. Installers book up as the first cold snap arrives, and permitting or a building department question adds weeks in some jurisdictions. If a decision is made in late summer or early autumn, it lands before the season. Made in December, it usually does not.
