Sometimes yes, often no, and the decision is not yours to make alone. Whether you can drop a vent-free gas log set into the fireplace you already have is settled by four things: whether the ventless category is permitted at your address, whether your firebox is listed for that use, whether the room is large enough under your adopted code, and whether a licensed gas professional will connect it. None of those depend on the log set you liked in the showroom. And there is one fact to hold onto before any of it: a ventless set sends all of its combustion products, including water vapor, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, into the room you are sitting in, because there is no flue in use.
That last sentence is the conversion. Everything else is detail.
What “converting to vent-free” actually changes
Most pages frame this as a fireplace upgrade. It is closer to installing a different class of appliance in a hole that used to be a chimney.
Your wood-burning fireplace has one safety system, and it is the chimney. Draft carries smoke, carbon monoxide and moisture outside. When something goes wrong with a wood fire, it usually goes wrong because the flue failed: a blockage, a damaged liner, a closed damper, a downdraft.
A ventless log set removes that system from the equation. The products of combustion stay in the room by design, which is exactly why the heat stays in the room too. The safety systems are no longer the chimney. They become the room’s air volume, the oxygen depletion safety shutoff on the burner, a working carbon monoxide alarm, and the discipline of running the unit the way the manual says.

Before you convert a wood fireplace to ventless gas logs: five questions
Answer them in this order and you will not waste money on a set that cannot be installed.
1. Is the ventless category permitted at your address?
This is first because it can end the project outright. Vent-free gas appliances are restricted or prohibited in some US states and municipalities, and they are effectively prohibited across much of Canada. We will never tell you an installation is permitted where you live, because that claim is wrong for a large share of readers.
The authorities that decide are your state and local building code as adopted and amended, your local building department or fire marshal, and your gas utility or propane supplier. 2. Is your firebox masonry, or is it factory-built?
This question kills more conversions than legality does, and retailers rarely lead with it.
A factory-built (prefabricated) metal fireplace is a listed assembly, tested and certified for one specific use: burning wood with its own chimney system. Vent-free log manufacturers and hearth trade sources are consistent that a vent-free set does not belong in a prefabricated fireplace unless that fireplace is specifically listed for it or its manufacturer approves it in writing. The concern is heat that would normally leave through the flue instead loading the metal firebox and the combustible framing behind it.
Masonry fireplaces are the more usual candidate, and even then the set must be listed for the application and sized to the firebox. Do not assume. Find the data plate inside your firebox, read the fireplace manufacturer’s instructions for your model, and have a qualified hearth professional confirm it.
3. Does the room have the volume your code requires?
Here is the rule that most conversion guides skip entirely, and it is the one you can check yourself tonight.
The model residential code text for unvented room heaters, at section G2445 of the 2024 International Residential Code (the fuel gas provisions, as published on UpCodes and checked 2026-08-18), sets four limits worth knowing:

Read G2445.5 backwards and it gives you a minimum room size for any set you are considering. A 20,000 Btu/h log set needs at least 1,000 cubic feet, because 20,000 divided by 20 is 1,000. A room 12 feet by 15 feet with an 8-foot ceiling holds 1,440 cubic feet, so it clears that particular set with room to spare. A 30,000 Btu/h set would need 1,500 cubic feet and would not.
Two cautions. Your state may have adopted a different edition or amended this section, so confirm the text that applies to you rather than trusting ours. And the code has its own rules about whether an adjoining space counts toward the volume, which is a judgment for your installer and your building official, not for a homeowner with a tape measure.
4. Is the room a bedroom or a bathroom, or does it open only into one?
If the answer is yes, stop. Adopted codes prohibit fuel-burning appliances in sleeping rooms, bathrooms, toilet rooms and storage closets by default. Narrow exceptions exist in the code text for a single small wall-mounted unvented heater, with a low input limit and conditions attached (the bathroom exception in the International Residential Code is written around a heater not greater than 6,000 Btu/h). Those exceptions describe small heaters, not decorative log sets, and they are not yours to self-certify.

5. Who is running the gas?
Gas work is licensed work. This site publishes no gas line, gas connection or installation procedure and never will, and a page that hands you one has misjudged what it is writing about.
You need a licensed gas fitter or a qualified hearth technician to run and test the line, verify the fuel type (a set listed for natural gas is not to be used on propane without a manufacturer-approved conversion by a qualified professional), and set the appliance up under its listing. Have the chimney inspected by a qualified chimney professional as part of the same project. The flue may no longer be the appliance’s exhaust path, but it is still a building component that can leak water, harbor animals or shed masonry.
The damper question, and why we will not answer it for you
Search this topic and you will find confident, contradictory instructions about whether the damper stays open, gets clamped or can be closed.
That is because the answer is model-specific and jurisdiction-specific. Vented gas log sets require the damper locked open with a clamp. Ventless sets are a different product with different instructions, and some local authorities impose their own condition on top of the manual. The instruction that governs your installation is the one printed in your set’s own installation manual, as applied by the person who installs it. Read that manual before you buy, not after.
What nobody selling the conversion puts in the brochure
- Moisture. Complete gas combustion produces water vapor, and with no flue it stays indoors. Readers meet this as condensation on cold windows and exterior walls during long burns. If your house already runs humid in winter, a ventless set makes that worse rather than better.
- Home insurance. Some insurers care about unvented combustion appliances. Tell yours, in writing, before installation rather than after a claim.
- Home inspection and resale. Inspectors write these units up. A conversion that was never permitted or that sits in a room too small for it becomes a negotiating point at sale.
- Air quality for sensitive occupants. Nitrogen dioxide is a normal product of gas combustion, and it stays in the room along with everything else. Households with asthma or other respiratory conditions should weigh that before, not after.
The conditions of operating one, stated plainly
If your fireplace clears all five questions and the work is done properly, these are not optional extras:
- A working carbon monoxide alarm is a condition of running the appliance, not an accessory. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and your senses will not warn you. - The oxygen depletion sensor is not a carbon monoxide detector. It watches oxygen in the surrounding air and shuts off the gas at the threshold set by the standard. It is a required safety device, and it is not measuring the gas that kills people.
- Supplemental use only. The same code section that sets the room volume rule states that unvented room heaters must not be used as the sole source of comfort heating in a dwelling unit.
- Read the manual’s operating restrictions. Many vent-free manuals carry their own limits on how the appliance may be run, including ventilation instructions. We do not publish a universal run-time number, because there is not one; yours is in your model’s manual.
