A vent-free appliance is built, orificed and listed for one fuel, and the fuel is not a setting. It changes which models you can buy, how the gas reaches the appliance, what the pressures at the appliance have to be, and how the fuel behaves if it ever escapes. What it does not change is the reason this category is regulated at all. Natural gas and propane units alike burn in the room and release the combustion products into the room.
Whether you may install one at all is decided before the fuel question, and it is decided locally. Unvented gas appliances are permitted in much of the United States, restricted in some places and prohibited outright in others, and some jurisdictions treat propane appliances under additional rules of their own. A propane tank in the yard does not make an unvented appliance legal indoors.

Carbon monoxide is the same problem on either fuel
Both fuels are hydrocarbons and both produce carbon monoxide when combustion is incomplete. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission calls carbon monoxide the “Invisible Killer” because it is “a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas”, and reports more than 200 accidental non-fire carbon monoxide deaths a year in the United States associated with consumer products (CPSC Carbon Monoxide Information Center, read September 2, 2026).
A working carbon monoxide alarm is a condition of operating a vent-free appliance on either fuel, not an accessory. Our page on vent-free fireplaces and carbon monoxide covers the mechanism in full, and there is no version of the fuel choice that removes the requirement.

The right-hand column of that last row is the point of the page. Nothing in the fuel choice changes the risk profile of the appliance category. It changes logistics, model availability and one specific hazard behavior.
Why the appliance cannot simply take either fuel
Propane and natural gas do not carry the same energy in the same volume of gas, and they are not delivered at the same pressure. That is why the burner orifice and the appliance’s pressure requirements are specific to the fuel, and why a unit is certified for the fuel named on its data plate.
For scale, the US Energy Information Administration publishes a conversion factor of 1,036 Btu per cubic foot for natural gas, and 91,452 Btu per gallon for propane (EIA, British Thermal Units, read September 7, 2026). Those two figures use different units for a reason: natural gas arrives as a gas at the meter, propane arrives as a liquid in a tank and is drawn off as vapor. The appliance sees gas either way, but the amount of energy in each cubic foot of that gas is not the same, so an orifice sized for one fuel passes the wrong amount of the other.
Feeding an appliance the fuel it was not orificed for is how a burner ends up running rich or over-fired. In a room with no flue, incomplete combustion has nowhere to go.
The one hazard that genuinely behaves differently
Propane vapor is denser than air. The US Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration states that “when released from pressure, LPG forms a vapor that is denser than air”, and that “released vapor may flow along the ground and into drains, sinking to the lowest level of the surroundings”. The same source notes that at very high concentrations “LPG vapor is anesthetic and subsequently an asphyxiant by diluting or decreasing the available oxygen” (PHMSA, Products Transported in Pipelines, read September 7, 2026).
Natural gas does not do that. This is why propane installations attract extra attention in basements, crawl spaces, pits and any room below grade, and why your jurisdiction may have rules for propane appliances and containers that do not apply to natural gas at all. Ask your building department and your propane supplier directly about below-grade rooms. Do not reason it out from a general article, including this one.
The supply side is not yours either
On natural gas, the utility owns the service up to the meter. On propane, a supplier owns or leases the tank, sets the regulator and fills it. Tank sizing, tank placement, regulator settings and the buried or above-ground line are the supplier’s and the installer’s work under their own rules, not homeowner projects.
Two practical consequences follow. First, get the supplier involved before you choose an appliance, because the tank and regulator that feed a cookstove may not be what an added heating appliance needs. Second, ask what your supply arrangement costs across a heating season before you assume anything about running costs. We publish no price figures for either fuel, because they move by region and by season and a number we printed today would be wrong when you read it.
Where this stops being your decision
Connecting either fuel to a vent-free appliance is licensed work. It is done by a licensed gas fitter or a qualified hearth technician, working to the manufacturer’s instructions, under whatever permit and inspection your jurisdiction requires. The same is true of changing an appliance from one fuel to the other, which is done only with the manufacturer’s own listed conversion kit for that exact model, by that same qualified trade. Frequently asked questions
Can I buy a natural gas ventless fireplace and run it on propane?
Not as it stands. The appliance is orificed and certified for the fuel named on its data plate, and running it on the other fuel without the manufacturer’s own listed conversion kit for that model, fitted by a qualified trade, puts the burner outside the conditions of its listing. That listing is what makes the appliance legal to install. Buy the unit for the fuel you actually have, or have the conversion done properly by a licensed gas fitter or qualified hearth technician.
Is propane or natural gas safer in a vent-free fireplace?
Neither fuel makes the appliance category safe, and we will not present one as the safe choice. Both burn in the room with no flue. The differences that matter are practical: propane vapor is denser than air and sinks if it escapes, which affects below-grade rooms and is why local propane rules exist, while natural gas is supplied continuously by a utility. The carbon monoxide alarm, the room volume limit and the prohibited locations apply the same way to both.
Does propane produce more heat than natural gas in the same fireplace?
The appliance’s input rating on its data plate is the figure that matters, and a model listed for propane and the same model listed for natural gas are each set up to reach their stated input on their own fuel. Propane carries more energy per cubic foot of gas, which is why the propane version uses a smaller orifice, not why it produces more heat. Compare the Btu/h input ratings on the two data plates, not the fuels.
How do I tell which fuel a unit is built for?
The data plate on the appliance names the fuel, and most manufacturers also carry it in the model number as an NG or LP suffix and on the carton. The manual states the inlet and manifold pressures the appliance requires for its fuel. If a listing online does not name the fuel, treat that as missing information rather than a detail to sort out on delivery day.
Do I need a permit for a propane vent-free appliance?
Ask your building department, because it depends on your jurisdiction and some of them treat propane appliances and containers under additional rules. The question is worth asking before you buy rather than after, along with whether unvented appliances are permitted at all at your address and what inspection the installation will need.
